Mississippi Responds

On April 20, 2010, an explosion on the offshore oil drilling platform (Deepwater Horizon) caused it to burn and sink, ultimately spilling oil into the Gulf of Mexico.  We continue to pray for all those whose lives have been directly affected by this tragedy; the need for help is acute and overwhelming.

If you would like to add your name to a registry for volunteer opportunities in one of the four affected Coastal states, please click on one or all of the following links:

·         Louisiana

·         Mississippi

·         Alabama

·         Florida

You can also visit www.volunteermississippi.org to become a Coastal Watcher.  (Click here to find out more information.)   In the interim, please check back often for updates and other opportunities for service in the State of Mississippi.

LESM Reaches out to 7 Counties affected by April 24 Tornadoes

On Saturday, April 24, a devastating tornado struck Mississippi leaving in its wake a trail of destruction extending 149 miles long and 1.5 miles wide.  The storm killed 10 residents and injured dozens of others.  Property damage is severe and extensive. (Contact www.msema.org for current information and resources.)

LESM has sent an assessment and emergency clean-up team with heavy equipment to the tornado damaged area and is providing debris clean-up.  LESM’s Director of Disaster Preparedness and Response, Sandra Braasch, President of Mississippi Voluntary  Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), is holding daily calls of State and some national VOAD member organizations to collaborate and coordinate response efforts.

LESM is prepared to deploy case management and construction teams and other related resources when resources become available to fund those activities.

If you would like to donate to LESM’s Mississippi tornado relief and long term recovery efforts, please contact Lutheran Disaster Response (
www.ldr.org) or Episcopal Relief and Development (www.er-d.org).
If you would like to volunteer, please contact Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Services by calling 888/353-1793 or register to volunteer at www.volunteermississippi.org.
